Westpac warns customers of email scam

Email asks customers to enter credit card details, links to fake website

Westpac Australia has warned customers to delete a hoax email which asks them to sign into a website in order to confirm their credit card details.

An email with the subject line Creditcard INFO - possible fraudulent transaction has been sent to some customers with the following message:

“An error was detected in your Westpac credit card information. The reason for the error is not certain, but for security reasons, we have suspended your credit card temporarily.

“We need you to update your information for further use of this credit card. To lift this suspension click on the next button and follow the steps to re-activate your credit card.”

The bank tweeted today that the email links to a fake Westpac website.

“Don't open, just delete” read the tweet.

A Westpac Australia spokeswoman said that it regularly informs customers of malicious spam emails.

"We provide security guidance to help customers protect themselves from such threats through social media and our website," she said.

In March 2013, customers were targeted with an email which pretended to be from Westpac Online Banking. It said that the customer had been locked out of their account due to three incorrect login attempts.

The email contained a hyper link which if clicked took customers to a fake or ghost website.
