Remote Desktop Software: Review

Splashtop

Splashtop is another in the line of easy to use remote desktop tools that take remote desktop out of the administrator’s toolkit and into mainstream use.

With a big focus on enterprise deployment, Splashtop provides both its own servers to mediate connections or the option for an on-premise server, ensuring complete control over end-to-end. Active Directory integration to import users is also featured, along with logging and report generation for connected machines, and being able to control user and device access policies.

Encryption is, as with many of the other products on the market, handled with 256-bit AES. Other security features include enforcing session time-outs, blanking the remote machine's screen while connected, and disabling clipboard sharing and file transfers. The Enterprise version has these disabled by default for example to allow employees to access and interface with their work desktops but not to transfer data 'out of the network'. About the only feature missing here is two-factor authentication.

And, again like Teamviewer, Splashtop competes by extending its functionality to cover collaboration and training features. These include a whiteboard ability, allowing annotations to be drawn on screen, and a collaborative browser (iPad only) to share a browser session remotely with others via invite. Other collaborative features include multi-user access to allow teams or external parties access to a host, and native file transfer functionality.

Earlier this year Splashtop introduced browser-based access using Chrome for the Business level suite. It's worth noting also that for personal and business level products, although connections are run un-mediated and are direct peer-to-peer, authentication with Splashtop's servers via a Splashtop account is still required to use the software.

Operating system support covers Windows, MacOS X, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 8. A Linux client is also available under the Personal product range, but not for business or enterprise.
