Remote Desktop Software: Review

Remote Utilities

Remote Utilities, as its title suggests, is all about remote access and is one the more fuller-featured products available. A central interface provides for an address-book of frequently accessed machines which can be synchronised with a central server, as well as ancillary features such as file transfer, Task Manager access, and even a direct command-line terminal on the remote host.

Both direct peer-to-peer and mediated connections are supported, routing through a central server managed by Remote Utilities. However, the option is also provided to setup your own gateway server to manage connections between Remote Utilities server and client machines, which aside from adding peace of mind security-wise will also provide better performance with the mediating server on your own network. All connections are encrypted with 256-bit AES.

For mediated connections each machine is given an 'Internet-ID' to identify on the server, and this makes it easy to connect to a remote machine even if its IP unknown or changed. And, aside from dedicated host and client viewer programs, a stand-alone agent can be used to setup a connection on a machine without installing any software. Optionally, IP filtering can be used to prevent only authorised clients connecting, and security can be further enhanced through the use of a shared secret that can be used to verify the authenticity of a foreign computer.

Remote Utilities extends its functionality by including features specific to remote assistance, which include text direct-chat, voice chat, sound and camera capture, multi-monitor support, and remote program execution. Sessions can also be recorded as video for later auditing or compliance.

Finally, free viewing clients are available for both iOS and Android, but beyond this only Windows systems are supported. It's not as pretty as some of the other programs we look at here, but it covers all the bases and clearly has the IT admin in mind.
