General Motors has appointed its first cybersecurity chief, who will lead efforts by the company to secure the ever increasing computer technology now being deployed in cars.
Jeffrey Massimilla will lead the newly established Vehicle and Vehicle Services Cybersecurity unit, which will deal with cybersecurity for vehicles and vehicle-connected services.
The unit will combine internal skills with outside specialists, said GM, to "develop and implement protocols and strategies to reduce the risks associated with cybersecurity threats".
GM CEO Mary Barra recently announced the company will offer "automated driving" solutions from 2016. The car manufacturer will roll out a "Super Cruise" technology that will allow hands-free driving with lane following, speed control and braking functions.
Massimilla joined GM in 2010, and was previously director of global validation.
