Paypal, Braintree to host 24-hour hackathon for the first time ever in Asia

Global payments providers PayPal and Braintree will be hosting a 24-hour hackathon for the first time ever in Asia, where developers compete for the chance to win a trip to Silicon Valley and a reward of USD$100,000.

The event will be held in Singapore on September 13 and 14 2014, the event organizers said in a statement today.

The hackathon is part of the global BattleHack competition that will visit 14 cities around the world. The finals will take place this November in the United States. The winner of the Singapore BattleHack will be flown to the finals at PayPal's headquarters in Silicon Valley to battle it out for the USD$100,000 prize and the "battle axe" trophy.

During the Singapore BattleHack, developers will be tasked with building a mobile application that solves a local problem of their choice. It could range from, for example, helping charities match donors or improving public transportation planning, incorporating the PayPal API or Braintree SDK.

Developers can compete as individuals, as a team or even find people to collaborate with on the day, with a maximum of four people to a team.

The judging panel for the Singapore Battle Hack will include John Lunn, Global Director of the PayPal Developer Network and influencers within the tech scene in Singapore, to be announced in the coming weeks.

"We are very excited to bring BattleHack to Asia for the first time. We picked Singapore as our first Asian BattleHack city for its passionate and active local developer community, and the city's great technology infrastructure," said John Lunn, Global Director, PayPal and Braintree Developer Network.
