Celebrity-hating hacker 'Guccifer' arrested by Romanian police

Downton Abbey is safe at last

'Guccifer', the prank hacker who made a name embarrassing the rich and famous with audacious attacks on their personal online accounts, has reportedly been arrested by Romanian police.

The suspect has been widely identified as Marcel Lazar Lehel, 42, picked up in the Romanian town of Arad near the Hungarian border on Wednesday.

Ironically, it appears that Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime (DIICOT) has arrested Lehel for alleged hacking activities in the country and not for the attacks that made him internationally famous.

It is hard to think of an attacker that was so consistently successful at targeting the rich, famous and downright powerful. High-profile attacks leaked to The Smoking Gun website included that on Colin Powell's Facebook page and the leaking of an unpublished book by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell.

He even leaked a script for the middle-brow UK TV drama, Downton Abbey from its author, Julian Fellowes. Nothing escaped this hacker's withering gaze.

The most infamous attack was probably that on the circle of George HW Bush senior and his circle a year ago, including that of his son George W. After gaining access through the poorly-secured email accounts of people connected to the family, Guccifer leaked sensitive data including the PIN code that would allow someone to enter the compound of George Bush senior.

After leaking some self-portraits by George W, his attacks did have the unintentional effect of annoying anyone who happens to dislike the former President by publicising his interesting compositional talents.

"YOU WILL BURN IN HELL, BUSH!," he later informed the former President during his takeover of the Facebook page of US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Guccifer is believed to have hacked other celebrities, or at least he later claimed to have done so in email interviews.
