Google Chrome extension allows users to beat David Cameron's porn filter

The web browser extension is aptly named "Go Away Cameron"

A new web browser extension is allowing children to get around prime minister David Cameron's porn filters.

The Google Chrome extension, aptly named "Go Away Cameron", promises to bypass the UK's parental controls and 'bring porn back'.

The vast majority of internet service providers (ISPs) have implemented safety filters in recent weeks after Cameron said that they were necessary to prevent children "stumbling across hardcore legal pornography".

For example, BT turned on its network-based filter this week, which asks customers whether or not they want to be able to access adult content. Those who decide to activate parental controls can choose to set the filter to strict, moderate or light, with each one taking into account: pornography, "obscene and tasteless" content, hate and self-harm, drugs, alcohol and tobacco and dating sites.

Other ISPs such as TalkTalk and Sky already have filters in place, while Virgin are running trials ahead of a possible roll out at the start of 2014.

But the Go Away Cameron extension threatens to make the filters redundant as it enables users to browse any site they wish, even if the parental controls are switched on.

The founder of the porn-enabling tool, @nubela, writes on the site's download page: "Go away Cameron, or GAC, is a chrome extension that automates a private and smart proxy service to route your access around censorship so you can regain your access to your favourite blocked sites in UK.

The Singapore-based computer science graduate added: "I don't have, nor will I ever have, an exhaustive list of UK banned sites. What I can do is to merely detect whether the website returns you an error message saying UK blocked it. (This is when the extension kicks in)."

The browser extension was established in light of a similar tool being set up in Singapore to evade the government's internet filters.

@nubela claims on the download page that the GAC extension can be used in any country. "This will work anywhere, and with any websites that are blocked by firewall, universities, workplaces, nanny filters, or well, censorship," he says.

Furthermore, users that decide to install the extension are untraceable because no logs are stored. @nubela claims it is also safer and faster than using an unknown hotspot shield or surfing websites through a random web proxy.

Last week, a BBC Newsnight investigation revealed that many sites children should be allowed to visit, including sex education sites, are blocked by the recently introduced porn filters.
