Newly public FireEye, a Milpitas, Calif., company whose sandboxing technology has been the envy of other security companies, is the fastest growing network company on this year's Deloitte Fast 500 list.
The list, which looks at North American companies that have been around for at least 5 years and currently claim $5 million in revenue, also comprises software, Internet, media, life sciences and clean technology companies. Software companies increasingly including cloud and software-as-a-service vendors -- make up the biggest chunk of the list, at 48%, with communications/networking companies accounting for 9% of those on the list.
"We are in the midst of the hottest IPO market since 2007, and the fastest growing sectors for IPOs remain IT industries like the cloud, enterprise software, Internet and healthcare IT and corresponding services," says James Atwell, partner at Deloitte & Touche.

The very top-ranked company on the Fast 500 is Rocket Fuel, which provides an online ad network.
As for what Deloitte defines as communications/networking companies, FireEye comes in at No.6 on the overall list, having shown 36,667% revenue growth from 2008-2012 (yes, all of the percentages in this ranking are silly big numbers like these).
Other communications/networking companies on the list:
- No.30 Palo Alto Networks, which is in the news this week for its work with VMware on virtualized next-generation firewalls;
- No.31 Network Solutions Provider, a tech integrator in El Segundo, Calif.;
- No.41 Aerohive Networks, a Sunnyvale, Calif., maker of wireless LAN products, including those adhering to the 802.11ac standard; and
- No.70 Flowroute, which is in the SIP trunking business.
Other vendors of note to those of you in networking, even though these companies are technically categorized as communications/networking by Deloitte: No.2 Acquia, which supports Drupal websites; and No.4 Fusion-io, a flash memory specialist.
Other companies of note on the list: Elon Musk's Tesla Motors at No.70 and yes BlackBerry, at No.369.
