If you were one of the unfortunate souls whose PlayStation 3 was rendered near-useless by the borked version 4.45 firmware update, fear not! A new PS3 firmware update is on its way to fix that pesky console-killing problem. The bad news: It's not coming all that quickly.
In fact, when all is said and done, the PlayStations of affected system owners will have been down for more than a week. The disastrous update came down the pipes on June 18, while Sony says the redemptive one won't become available until June 27. That's a long time to go without your Uncharted fix.
Few victims?
On the plus side, Sony says only a "small number" of PlayStation 3 consoles were taken down by the version 4.45 software update--though that's a statement with plenty of wiggle room. The company yanked the update lickity-split after warnings of its nefarious nature started being shouted from Internet rooftops (i.e., Reddit and Twitter). Ironically, the version 4.45 update was intended to improve system stability.
Sony's tweets and forum posting about the impending patch didn't detail exactly how PlayStation 3 owners with a hung-up console will be able to install the new firmware update.
The workaround will probably involve jumping into the system's safe mode and installing the software via a thumb drive, so be sure to have those USB keys handy on June 27.
