Indian engineering students design anti-rape lingerie

Rape has become one of the most frequently reported crimes against women in India. To battle this scourge, a group of engineering students in Chennai have designed lingerie that gives electric shocks to sexual offenders.

According to a report published on NDTV, the outfit would be just like any other brassiere that would insulate the user from shocks but when the offender touches the victim, he would receive 82 electric shocks. Also, the bra has a built-in GPS in it that would "alert the exact location to police and intimate one pre-set family member".

The engineers, students of SRM University in Chennai, said the user can turn off the features if she so desires.

"The team says their aim is not to make profit but to ensure this reaches every woman in the country," the report said. "Many companies have already approached them."

The team's innovative idea has won them The idea and the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation awards.

However, the idea has not been patented yet.
