WA Police will make use of IP cameras connected by wireless to lift the security surrounding the leaders of some 70 countries and their entourages at the forthcoming 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) meeting to be held in Perth.
According to WA Police documents, the agency currently has no in-car video equipment suitable to monitor the progress of motorcades and give advance warning of any threat to the motorcade during the meeting.
The use of in-car streaming IP cameras would be able to address this and provide vision of sections of the motorcade route which are currently not serviced by traffic cameras.
According to the documents, the high performance colour cameras will be mounted on the front and rear of police vehicles as they accompany approximately 80 motorcades.
The cameras will be connected to a wireless network with dedicated bandwidth and static IP addressing for remote live streaming of footage to WA Police’s Command Centre. The use of multiple wireless carriers will be considered to allow for failover in the event of a network failure.
The CHOGM meeting is slated for 28 to 30 October and is held every two years to allow Commonwealth leaders to discuss global and Commonwealth issues, and to agree on collective policies and initiatives.
Earlier this month WA Police said it was to rip and replace its regional analogue radio system and move to digital as a means of providing secure and robust communications for front-line officers across the whole state.
Late last year the agency reported resource savings and police safety improvements since a real-time aerial video system was introduced in July.
