Security software provider Kaspersky Lab is considering locating its next data centre in Victoria, with plans expand its Cloud services in Australia.
Kaspersky Asia Pacific director of software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud services, Bernie Bengler, said the chances of the new data centre being in Melbourne are “extremely high” judging from customer proposals.
“Having one there also limits the risk if our two Sydney data centres go offline,” he said. “We also hope to update the Sydney data centres in the next three months if customer proposals come through.”
“We do not plan to craft one big silo as a data centre and utilise it as much as we can, but it is more the philosophy of tying smaller data centres together.”
When asked if the company would look at Western Australia to target the mining sector, Bengler said Kaspersky would consider the state if customer numbers warranted it.
“Some of the proposals we are working on are from Western Australia,” he said. “There is a break even for customers when we consider a data centre and where to locate it next.”
The strategy was outlined during the organisation’s corporate product launch of multi-layered enterprise, antivirus protection in Sydney.
Since the local launch of its hosted email and Web security in December 2010, the company has hosted information from two leased data centres in Sydney.
